This week, we were grouped and created a video. The video was of our ‘talent’ (a group member performed classical piano) and the rest of the group worked behind camera: We had two people in charge of cameras, one on sound and one on light (me).

A lot goes on behind the camera!!! We had to set up the equipment: we had to charge the cameras, microphone and lights, put up the stands and find where to put it all. We had to make sure that the camera angles made sense - As our video was of a piano performance, we wanted to capture her hands, not her back. We also had to set up the microphone, make sure that it was working properly and recording. We spent a lot of time wondering how it works ahaha but we got it in the end. We also had to figure out the best lighting. We turned off the lights in the room and used a cool toned light. The position of the light is important, because we did not want to have any shadows to ruin the shot.

We took two shots of the performance and saved all footage. In week 5 we will spend time editing and creating the video!

Todays lesson made me more appreciative for all of the hard work that goes behind camera in order to create great content for viewers.

I will be completely honest. I had no idea what was happening this lesson. Everything was completely new but whatever we did, it was extremely interesting and fun!

Today, we learnt about four different kinds of music technology

1. Digital Audio Workstation, DAW: softwares that enable you to notate, record and write your own music, and depending on the what the software offers, you can choose from a wide variety of sounds

2. Sequencers: softwares that allow you to listen to and edit audio recordings.

3. Loop: when a piece of music (rather it be a short melody, rhythm, it can be anything) is repeated again and again

4. Midi: a file that is used to transfer notation from software to software. This is very helpful because you do not have to rewrite everything again but import a midi file of your work – it is very easy to do too

In class, we used Garage Band to create music using loops. This was very fun as I have never done anything like it before.

Very excited to see what we will learn in the future!
